About this machine
What it is and what it is good for.
A Poręba TR 70 BIS centre lathe from FUM Poręba in Poland, swinging Ø 700 mm over the bed and Ø 400 mm over the cross slide, with 2 000 mm between centres and a centre height of 350 mm.
The TR series is the workhorse of Polish heavy lathe building and is still in production today in larger sizes. Parts and documentation are easier to come by than for most machines of this age, and any turner who has worked in central Europe will know the controls.
At € 5 000 this is a lot of lathe for the money — a Ø 700 mm swing and two metres between centres covers shaft work, flanges, couplings and repair jobs that a smaller machine simply cannot hold. It comes with four chucks: one mounted and three more, which at current prices is a useful part of the value on its own.
