About this machine

What it is and what it is good for.

A WMW SFBZ 2200/6000 slideway grinding machine built in Germany in 1972 — the machine you need to grind the ways of another machine tool. It takes a table of 2 240 × 6 000 mm and grinds up to 2 200 mm wide, 6 000 mm long and 2 000 mm high, on a workpiece of up to 15 tonnes.

It had a general revision in 2022. The feed boxes with electromagnetic couplings were replaced with motors and reducers on both heads, and the bearings in the universal grinding head were renewed — the two assemblies that usually decide whether a machine of this age is worth buying.

This is a machine for a rebuilder rather than a jobbing shop: if you recondition machine tools, it is what lets you grind beds and ways in house instead of sending them out. Machine weight 130 tonnes.
